My name is Khiem Tang (19) and I am currently an undergraduate at The University of Texas at Austin.
They say a picture is worth a thousand
words. With my photography, I strive to
truly emulate this notion. My images all
contain a story or message, but they are not concrete like novels or
texts. Visual perception operates on
many planes, and thus my work can be interpreted in many different ways. I hope to invoke strong emotions, and help
others see the world and its facets in a different, more captivating
perspective, whether those facets are simple or complex. By utilizing every aspect of my image, I
encourage my viewers to create their own stories and discoveries with my
photos, and uniquely define how my images are significant or compelling to
them.
My work consists of photographs taken of
different landscapes, though they each have their own unique personality and
focus. My portfolio consists of images
that are both simple and complex, with each containing a unique story when
interpreted in conjunction with the title.
Through variations in color, tone, and different balances
and perspectives, I try to create images that are not only visually pleasing,
but also enticingly unusual. Every
attribute and photographic element in my photos is integral to their overall arrangement,
and they help to emphasize the viewers’ spatial awareness and sense of analytical
imagination. I chose these photographs
as I thought they were the most representative of my ultimate goal, and they
were all images that I found enthralling and meaningful after looking at
them.
Art has always played a large role in my life,
helping me open the doors to new fantasies, and comforting me through difficult
times. Growing up I drew for hours,
creating surreal worlds that could never be possible in reality, and while
drawing I imagined being in them. As I
continued to add new aspects and objects onto my work, I was simultaneously
manifesting my own story and fairy tale to absorb myself in. For a while I was convinced that this would
be the only way to truly create beautiful and satisfying art that I could
emotionally connect with, but after being introduced to a camera, my entire
outlook changed. With photography, I
learned that the world could be seen through many viewpoints. The world isn’t complicated, but it can be through
a different set of eyes. With a little
imagination and an open mind, I discovered that anything I see could become a
fantasy; a truly emotional and enthralling tale; something worth a thousand
words.
